Is Addiction Rehab Covered by Insurance?

|

If you or a loved one is suffering from substance abuse, one of the best treatment options is going to rehab. Rehab provides individuals with the tools, resources, and a support system to help them overcome their addiction and obtain sobriety.

But according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, only one in ten people suffering from substance abuse receive the proper treatment they need. Unfortunately, one of the most common reasons is payment issues. However, health insurance can cover treatment costs.

Do You Have to Pay for Rehab?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires private insurance companies to provide their members with some form of substance abuse treatment. Health insurance generally covers the cost of treatment for alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and mental health conditions.

However, your specific coverage is based on the specific health care plan you select, such as HMO or PPO plan. Insurance companies may also require their members to choose from a set of approved or “in-network” providers, as well as pay some of the costs for their treatment through deductibles, copayments, or premiums.

Before you enter a treatment program, check with your insurer to learn if your plan may be able to cover all or part of the costs.

What If You Have Medicaid or Medicare?

Through the ACA, individuals with Medicaid (TennCare in Tennessee) are now covered for substance abuse treatment as well. Additionally, Medicare covers alcohol or drug addiction treatment, so long as the provider states services are medically required, you choose an approved and in-network facility, and your provider creates your care plan.

What If You Don’t Have Insurance?

Even if you are not covered by health insurance, there are several ways you can pay for alcohol or drug rehab. Remember, investing in substance abuse treatment is one of the best decisions you can make for your recovery and your future.

The following are several options to pay for rehab without insurance:

  • Healthcare loans with low-interest rates

  • Low-interest credit card

  • Affordable payment plans

  • Scholarships

  • Fundraising

There are also state-funded rehab treatment centers distributed by the state and use government money to support individuals recovering from addiction. Furthermore, non-profit rehab facilities may also offer payment assistance.
