Is There a Difference Between Behavioral & Mental Health?

While many use the terms “behavioral health” and “mental health” interchangeably, there are several important differences between the two:

  • Behavioral Health: As the name implies, behavioral health relates to the intrinsic connection between a person’s behaviors and their overall physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Eating habits, exercise, drug use, thinking patterns, and other behaviors all play a critical role in a person’s overall well-being.
  • Mental Health: Mental health falls under the umbrella of behavioral health, but it specifically relates to a person’s psychological, social, and emotional well-being. Mental health affects how a person feels, thinks, and acts; a mental health condition, therefore, can affect a person’s emotions, thoughts, actions, and behaviors.

Behavioral and mental health are intrinsically linked. Just as one’s behaviors can affect their mental well-being, so too can one’s mental well-being affect their actions and behaviors.

The Connection Between Mental Health & Addiction

Substance misuse and abuse disorders co-occur at high rates with mental health disorders. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 50% of all people who experience a mental health disorder will also suffer from alcohol or drug abuse or addiction, and vice versa. This correlation is particularly pronounced in instances of serious mental illnesses, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

There is no single reason why this correlation exists. Rather, there are many potential factors that increase the risk of substance misuse and abuse among those suffering from mental health conditions. Often, individuals who are struggling attempt to self-medicate with alcohol, prescription medications, or illicit substances. Sometimes, individuals who are diagnosed with behavioral or mental health disorders are prescribed addictive drugs, which have a high potential for misuse. In many cases, alcohol and drug withdrawal symptoms worsen, trigger, or cause anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Behavioral & Mental Health Treatments

A key part of treating mental health disorders is addressing behavioral health. Often, treating various conditions involves examining the individual’s thought processes and behaviors and then providing the individual with tools to identify, address, and change those patterns.

Common behavioral and mental health treatments include:

Just as every individual is unique, treating behavioral and mental health involves looking at the individual’s specific situation and developing a program tailored to their needs. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to treating and managing mental health.

At Tennessee Wellness Center, we use a whole-person approach to your wellness. This typically involves examining your overall physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral health—and the interconnectivity of these things—before creating a plan that is specifically designed around your overall health.
