What is Klonopin?

Klonopin, the brand name for clonazepam, is a type of long-acting benzodiazepine that is commonly used to control and prevent seizures, though it’s also proven to be effective at treating panic attacks and other anxiety disorders.

What is Klonopin Used For?

By slowing down brain activity, Klonopin helps users to feel relaxed, which is why the drug is prescribed to many individuals struggling with anxiety, insomnia, and even withdrawal symptoms from alcohol abuse.

Klonopin is generally only prescribed for short-term use because of its addictive potential. Though commonly ingested in its tablet form, people who abuse the drug tend to crush tablets up into a powder and snort them to intensify its calming effects.

Klonopin Side Effects

In addition to its relaxing effects, Klonopin abuse can also cause some of the following symptoms:

  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Slow reaction times
  • Confusion and impaired cognition
  • Fainting
  • Impaired judgment
  • Reduced libido

Prolonged abuse of the drug can cause side effects that the drug is initially prescribed to prevent, such as anxiety and sleep disorders.

How Long Does Klonopin Stay In Your System?

Based on experiments, Klonopin was detectable for as long as one month in the urine, 28 days in the hair, and five to six days in the saliva.

What is a High Dose of Klonopin?

For seizures, 20mg is the maximum dosage allowed. For panic disorders, the highest dosage is 4mg per day.

Signs You May Have a Klonopin Addiction

Klonopin addiction begins when you’ve developed a tolerance to the drug, which means that over time, you’ll need to take more of it to achieve the same powerful calming effects. If you’ve begun taking more Klonopin than described or are continuing to use it to get high, you may be in danger of developing an addiction.

Some common signs of a Klonopin addiction include:

  • Continued Klonopin use despite negative consequences: Are you continuing to seek and abuse Klonopin even after it’s begun taking a negative toll on your life? People with addictions are often powerless to stop using the drug, even when they know they should.
  • Doctor shopping: Have you begun seeing different doctors to receive prescriptions for more Klonopin? This is considered “doctor shopping” and is a common behavior among people with addictions to prescription drugs like Klonopin.
  • Financial issues: If you’re spending your money trying to find or purchase more Klonopin and it’s begun to take a financial toll, you may have a drug problem. Some people with addictions will also borrow money or steal from their loved ones to fund their drug habits.
  • Loss of interest in social or professional obligations: Has your work or school performance suffered? Are your relationships strained because you’re spending more time getting high than seeing your loved ones? You might have an addiction.
  • You’re abusing Klonopin with other drugs: It’s fairly common for people with drug addictions to combine them with other substances to intensify their highs. People with Klonopin addictions are known to also abuse alcohol and cocaine.
