Understanding Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant. Derived from the coca leaf, it has been used for thousands of years by indigenous people and has been prevalent in the United States for over a century. Currently, in the U.S., cocaine is a Schedule II substance. This classification indicates cocaine’s high potential for abuse and imposes criminal penalties on those found using it unlawfully. According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 5.5 million people over the age of 12 in the United States abused cocaine in 2019 alone. Roughly 1 million people met the clinical definition of having cocaine use disorder this same year.

Cocaine addiction is recognized as a medical condition. When a person experiences addiction, they have a compulsive desire to ingest a substance, such as cocaine, despite negative side effects and other consequences in the individual’s life. Often, a person who has become dependent on or addicted to cocaine will spend a significant amount of time thinking about or actively working to obtain and ingest the drug.

For families, it can be incredibly difficult to understand why a loved one would continue using cocaine even when doing so results in health risks, relationship issues, and financial problems. It is important to understand that cocaine addiction is a disease, and someone who is struggling with it is likely unable to discontinue using cocaine—even if they want to—without professional help.

Signs of Cocaine Abuse

Often, people using cocaine lie about their drug use to themselves and others. This can make it incredibly difficult to spot when someone, whether it’s yourself or a loved one, may have a problem. That being said, there are certain signs that an individual has passed from experimenting with to abusing cocaine.

Signs of cocaine abuse can be physical, behavioral, or environmental in nature. Additionally, the signs that someone is abusing or addicted to cocaine vary depending on the way cocaine is ingested (whether as a powder known as hydrochloride salt or in its base form, referred to as “freebasing”).

Some of the physical signs of cocaine abuse include:

  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • A runny nose without being sick
  • Dilated (enlarged) pupils
  • Rapid changes in weight (gain or loss)
  • White powder on or near the nose or mouth
  • Drug paraphernalia, including razor blades, baggies, or spoons
  • Burns on the fingers or near the mouth

Some of the behavioral signs of cocaine abuse include:

  • Pronounced excitability
  • Unusual talkativeness
  • Noticeably altered confidence or self-esteem
  • Unexplained mood swings
  • Paranoia
  • Increased secretiveness and/or lying
  • Changes in sleep patterns (especially insomnia)
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Depression

Some of the environmental signs of cocaine abuse include:

  • Problems at work, including frequent tardiness or absences
  • Loss of employment
  • Legal problems
  • Financial problems and theft
  • Changes in social groups/friendships
  • Isolation
  • Engaging in unsafe behaviors or activities

For those concerned about their own cocaine use, the following could indicate a habit that has gotten out of control:

  • Your social life revolves around cocaine
  • You spend a significant amount of time thinking about getting or using cocaine
  • You devote a considerable amount of time to obtaining and ingesting cocaine
  • You have experienced withdrawal symptoms when not using cocaine
  • Your relationships with family members and certain friends have deteriorated
  • You find yourself frequently lying or being secretive about your drug use
  • You use cocaine when alone
  • You have told yourself that you will stop using cocaine but have not been able to

If you believe that you or someone you love may have a problem with cocaine abuse, help is available. At our Knoxville cocaine addiction rehab, we offer effective, proven treatment programs in a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment.

How We Treat Cocaine Addiction

At Tennessee Wellness Center, we believe in providing a whole-person, family-oriented approach to drug addiction treatment. We understand that cocaine abuse does not exist in a vacuum; often, the individual who is struggling is also facing co-occurring behavioral or mental health issues, social and environmental obstacles, and relationship conflicts. We tailor our treatment programs to your needs while providing personalized and familial support to help you obtain a united front against addiction.

Our primary treatment programs include:

  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): With our intensive outpatient program, you continue living at home while receiving treatment. Rather than sleep at our facility, you commute to various treatments and therapies on a daily or weekly basis. This allows you to continue working and maintaining important relationships with your loved ones while you heal.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP): Our partial hospitalization program is a slightly more intensive treatment option for those in need of a higher level of support in overcoming addiction. With PHP, you still sleep at home, but you spend a significant amount of time attending intensive treatments and therapy sessions at our facility.

Our programs offer an all-encompassing approach to your physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Along with the support of our family and yours, you will receive the tools and skills you need to navigate difficult situations, avoid drug-use triggers, and prevent or manage relapse. We strive to help our clients achieve long-term sobriety so that they can go on to live healthy, happy, and meaningful lives.
