Self-Care Tips for Recovery

Recovery can be a difficult journey for anyone. In addition to making healthier choices, we need the energy to remain sober every day. One of the best ways to stay on track is to practice self-care. Self-care involves using techniques to improve our overall well-being.

Self-care doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, we can make small gestures, including:

Take a Mental Health Day

Stress is overwhelming, especially during the recovery process. Constant working can cause burnout and makes us vulnerable to falling back into old habits. By prioritizing a mental health day, we have time to relax, de-stress, and do the self-reflection necessary to create realistic goals.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

We often underestimate the impact what we eat has on how we feel. In fact, our addiction worsens when we don’t maintain a proper diet. Not only does eating well keep our physical health intact, but it also improves our mood. These foods include:

  • Leafy greens
  • Berries
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Organic meat and poultry
  • Fatty fish

In addition to eating well, we must make sure we stay hydrated. Drinking adequate amounts of water help keep our minds clear and sharp.

Prioritize Getting Better Rest

We learn that sleep is imperative to overall health at a young age. During recovery, we need to regularly get enough sleep in order to balance our moods, help restore the organs most affected by addiction, and also improve brain function.

By getting at least eight hours of rest, we raise our chances of recovery. If we have busy schedules, we can also schedule a nap during the day to make sure our bodies and minds have enough time to repair themselves.
